Vivi tells you what to listen to – Memorial Day List (Pt 8)

Teased about this list and here it is. A short little list to keep your party going or to get your party started for this holiday weekend. Since this is the weekend of grilling and all they guys are out there slaving over a hot grill because girls don’t grill (fire hot!), I decided to have a girls only playlist. If they can’t be serving you dinner at least they could sing for you. No really I just got a couple of girls singing songs and decided to theme this bitch.  I tried to put the songs together in a way that flowed and started off softer and ramped up a bit.

1. She & Him –  In the Sun

I love She & Him. I love the old 60 popish sound to it. And I am smitten by Zooey Deschanel like some are. This was the first time I saw this video and the video is purely adorkable. Seriously it is cute and has lots of lets lift Zooey and put her over here.  The song itself is bright and sunny and a great start to your outing.

2. Gold Motel –  Make Me Stay

This band features Greta Salpeter from The Hush Sound (a band I dearly love). This song is just as good as the Hush Sound but only features Greta on vocals.  It is a cute pop tune that is good for your pregame drinks and maybe warming up the grill.

3. Kimbra – Cameo Lover

This song is spectacularly fun and has that light dance vibe. Kimbra in the video dances how I dance, lots of arm moments and little leg work. It is great simple pop that strikes you in the good fun happy ways.  Eeek this song makes me happy and I think it will do the same for you. Good for bouncing around from person to person for some good mingling.

4. Britney Spears – (You Drive Me) Crazy

Britney is classic for music to get you going and excited.  I decided to go into her back catalog for this song. Her newest album is super awesome and full of dance hits. This song always holds a special place in my heart. I love unashamedly the movie it was featured in (Drive Me Crazy with Melissa Joan Heart and Adrian Grenier) and I also love the video for this song. It is a great song to start the dance floor or pool dancing. Or maybe dance while you are watching your man flipping those burgers. Burgers are heavy yo.

5. Florence + the Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)

The majority of Florence’s catalog is ripe for booty shaking and moving. It may not be super fast Ke$ha style dancing but you can get going. At this point you are tired from cooking or watching people cooking. Lay on that chair with a beer and do some leg dancing. Ooh add in some arm movements too. Those would be awesome (don’t spill the beer!!!).

6. Tori Amos- She’s Your Cocaine

Of course I had to put a Tori Amos song on this list. I would say most songs from To Venus and Back and From the Choirgirl Hotel will give that kind of dancing pre-full on booty shaking vibe. I think most would have chosen Raspberry Swirl but I am a scant hipster and chose this one. It has a great hard beat that makes you want to get up and move but you aren’t fully sure how to to this song. Maybe that is just me as a rhythmless white girl.

7. Goldfrapp – Strict Machine

For the rhythmless white girl, this song is easy to move too. Simple beat but danceable. And it is hot. Good for some post cocktails light grinding. Wet suits, smell of smoke, isn’t that the best time for some light petting?

8. Marina and the Diamonds – Oh No!

I’ll admit that I didn’t really know this group before making this list. Looking for more fun dance music that is perfect for outside and I found this song. It is soooooo good. It is fun and almost an anthem song. Listen now or when it comes up in the playlist. But it is good. I swearz.

9. MIA -Galang

MIA is probably more known for being super preggos at an awards show and for the song Paper Planes. This is the first song of hers I heard and love off of I think her first album. I remember listening to that album with my best friend Annam and getting ready to go out dancing for this. This list is fairly short so I am considering it a pregame for your weekend and this song is great for that.  Booty shaking while hair priming music.

10. Grace and the Nocturnals – Paris (Ooh La La)

I love to dance even though I have no rhythm and it doesn’t matter if it is pop, rock, hip hop or even some country (not line dancing though). This the blusey rock song.  Dance, fuck, drive, paint a picture to this song. It is pretty good with any activity (maybe not card stacking).  I love this song. You will love this song. You will be Ooo La Laing everyone you meet that day.  Promise.

Here are all the songs all together in a Playlist

Hope you all have a fun and safe weekend and get outside and enjoy yourself and the music.
